THE RIGHT’S WET DREAMS ABOUT PUTIN

Pat Buchanan

Pat Buchanan, Nigel Farage and the new love affair of the Right with Vladimir
Putin

During the 1930’s there was a slogan employed by the French right, ‘better Hitler than Leon Blum!’ It was a symptom of the degraded state of right wing politics in France, a symptom of the rot that was to lead directly to Vichy.

I do not know if anyone on the American right has yet coined the slogan better Putin than Obama, but we surely cannot be far off that point. For here too the rot has set in and it appears to be just as deep.

Thus Pat Buchanan, former presidential candidate and right wing pundit has now come out as an admirer of Vladimir Putin.1 For Pat Buchanan any leader as vehemently opposed to liberal values, to equality for Gay and lesbians and who is as wedded to conservative ideology  as Putin, the attraction is very great indeed. 2 Buchanan however goes further, placing himself firmly in the better Putin than Obama camp.

‘President Reagan once called the old Soviet Empire “the focus of evil in the modern world.” President Putin is implying that Barack Obama’s America may deserve the title in the 21st century.’3

Pat Buchanan makes little secret that what President Putin is implying is what Pat Buchanan now has now come to believe.

In this country it seems to have surprised many commentators to find that the leader of the anti European United Kingdom Independence Party [UKIP]has been unable to keep his admiration for Putin a secret any longer.

Nigel Farage

'Thus Vladimir Putin, we learn from GQ magazine, is Nigel Farage's political pin up. The Russian president, he declared, was the world leader he admired most, though "as an operator, rather than as a person" – reiterating the pro-Russian sympathies he expressed in last week's debate with Nick Clegg'.4

Now there is surely more to this admiration than just the appeal of Vladimir Putin's extreme conservatism and hostility to liberal values. Is there not something highly attractive to people like Farage in Putin's bullying swagger? Here is a man able to say and do what he pleases, unconstrained by woolly liberalism and 'political correctness.' Putin brings to life and gives voice to their reactionary wet dreams. The gun toting KGB man representing an Arnold Schwarzenegger figure mowing down all those whining liberals. “Hasta la vista baby!”

Farage's hatred of the European Union and all it stands for has become so corrosive that he now happily worships at the alter of a KGB gangster, so long as he stands against the EU. Can it be too long before we start to hear UKIP whispers of, "Better Putin than Cameron?"

4http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2014/mar/31/farage-putin-politics-popular-resentment Many thought that Farage's “the EU has blood on its hands” over the Ukraine was an ill advised last minute throwaway line. But no, Farage has form supporting the Putin administration as Patrick Wintour and Rowena Mason show http://www.theguardian.com/politics/2014/mar/31/nigel-farage-relationship-russian-media-scrutiny Farage has considerable form when it comes to giving succor to the Putin regime.
